Is your size or how you feel about your body holding you back from attending a yoga class? I often hear people say ‘I am too big to practice Yoga‘ or ‘Let me loose weight and then I’ll try’, but there is no need to wait. A Yoga practice can be adapted for everyone’s needs, gentler movements and a slower pace can be introduced where necessary, and the yoga postures can be adapted to be more accessible and comfortable for the larger body. The breathing and meditation is also hugely beneficial for all!
People with larger bodies can be very strong and fit, or can experience reduced mobility for a variety of related and unrelated reasons, either way you are welcome to attend classes at Light Yoga Space and we will work together with you to make it work for you.
I once did a yoga demonstration showcasing some of the more advanced yoga postures. I was approached at the end of the session by someone who said to me that they were surprised to see someone with my body type doing such dynamic poses. I wasn’t sure how to respond. I think it is more a case of being underrepresented, stereotyped and mocked by the general media than it is larger bodied people being any more or less likely to be able to do what anyone else can do given the same time and training.
The group session doesn’t necessarily work for all of us. We might be particularly low in confidence and a tad beaten down by society’s negative messages about our bodies, and our own inner critic. We might have other physical limitations that mean we can’t keep up with the group activity, which we can find further demoralising. It might be that 1 or 2 private sessions with personal direction and gentle support could be your gateway to a regular practice that suits your specific needs.
You are welcome to try a one-off private session with Janice just to prepare you for the group session, or you can make private sessions your regular practice.
Private sessions with Janice are bespoke, warm and none-judgmental, with the focus on self acceptance and loving kindness, as well as on deep breathing, proper relaxation, and physical posture.
Janice Kate also runs a one-to-one 5-week yoga for larger bodies bespoke mentoring programme for a truly body affirming self-loving guided yoga practice.
Janice also runs welcoming day workshop, for people with larger bodies, who would like to join our regular drop-in classes but feel a bit daunted to make the first move.
In these workshops you are welcomed as you are and we will aim to safely explore the yoga poses as best practiced for your body, free from external judgment or pressure to perform.
Group size is limited to a maximum of 8 people to keep the experience as personal as possible, and a minimum of 3 people.
