About Yoga

Yoga originate from the spiritual texts of India (The Vedas).

The word ‘Yoga’ can be translated as unity, referring to the unity of the body, mind and soul. The ultimate goal of a yogi is self-realisation or unity of the individual soul with the divine.

About Sivananda (goes on Sivananda page)

All our classes are Classical Hatha Yoga, based on the Sivananda class sequence and our teachers are Sivananda trained.

Sivananda Yoga was founded by Swami Vishnudevanada in 1957. He was sent by his teacher Swami Sivananda to bring yoga to the West. With just pennies in his pocket he came from India to the West and set up the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres and Ashrams which are now a worldwide organisation spreading the teachings of yoga, and offering worldwide yoga teachers training courses.

The 4 Classical Paths of Yoga

Here in the West we tend to think of yoga as simply a type of physical exercise but there is much more to the origins and practice of yoga.

Jnana yoga- the intellectual path, inner-inquiry into the nature of the Self.

Karma Yoga- the pathway of reducing the ego through selfless-service and action.

Raja Yoga- the psychological approach focussing on concentration and meditation. Hatha yoga is actually an aspect of Raja Yoga.

Bhakti Yoga - the devotional path. Sublimating the emotions through devotion. Through various yogic practices of singing, chanting, prayer, mythology and traditional divine rituals one attempts to develop a personal relationship with the Universal Consciousness.

Five Points of Yoga

Swami Vishnudevananda dedicated his life to bringing the teachings of yoga to people in the West in a way that they could relate to. He encapsulated the essence of these teachings into 5 lifestyle points:

  1. 1.Proper Exercise (Asana)

  1. 2.Proper Breathing (Pranayama)

  1. 3.Proper Relaxation

  1. 4.Proper Diet
